The Kampala Urban Sanitation Project (KUSP)
Project (KUSP) was a 30-months project being implemented and
financed by KCC with additional support from the French Development
Agency (AFD) and the Central Government. The project aims at
improving living conditions in 35 urban poor communities (Parishes)
in Kampala by supporting safe water supply and provision of sanitation
infrastructure in the form of toilet facilities.
Lack of adequate sanitation and safe water supply infrastructures
features amongst the major health problems facing Kampala City, particularly
in the slum areas. One study conducted by Chemiphar estimated that up to
90% of the natural springs in Kampala are contaminated especially in the
wet season yet this remains a major source of water for the urban slum dwellers.
Under the project, which commenced in 2002, over 200 toilets, 350 water
points and 35 rain water collection tanks are planned to be set up in
the 35 selected parishes. The project is also working to protect up
to 85 natural springs in the city in order to improve the quality of
water accessible to the slum communities.
